Emergency Services have been busy responding to calls as October begins here in Grant County.
On Saturday the 4th, a report of abandoned horses in the Middle Fork area was received. Two horses were rescued by Silent Wave, and treated by a veterinarian. The case is currently under investigation and the responsible horse custodian has been contacted.
On Monday the 6th near 5pm, Deputies responded to a reported deceased person at the Elkhorn Cabins and Storage at 755 South Canyon. Richard Sladky, 70, of John Day was located deceased in his room. There were no signs of foul play, and family has been notified. Special thanks to the John Day Fire Department for assisting on the call, and to local persons who provided next of kin information.
Later, near 10pm, a car crash with a single occupant was reported on Highway 395 B mile post 108 north of Mt. Vernon. David Hickox, 66, of John Day was the sole occupant the south bound vehicle, who sustained injuries in the crash. He was later transported to an out of area hospital.
The vehicle caught fire and was consumed, starting a small wildland fire. The Mt. Vernon Rural Fire Department responded along with Deputies, OSP, and the Blue Mt. Hospital Ambulance. The fire spread was stopped and held to a limited size. The Oregon State Police are handling the case. With the Fall season upon us, take extra time getting where you need to go. Deer are on the move, frost is on the morning roads, and many hunters are out and about. Be safe, check on your neighbors, and get prepared for winter.
