Vandetta gets 40 days in jail for car prowls/vehicle theft

CANYON CITY – One of the persons responsible for a long string of car prowls, a stolen vehicle, and multiple thefts has been convicted in Grant County Circuit Court.

Karsen Vandetta, 20, pleaded guilty to Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, four counts of Theft in the First Degree and one count for Theft in the Second Degree. He was sentenced to a total of 40 days in jail and placed on Supervised Probation for 24 months.

Fourteen counts were disposed with no conviction. Nothing has been released regarding conviction or sentencing of the juvenile who was also involved in the crimes.

In the early morning hours of June 29th, the Grant County Emergency Communication Center received a call about a possible car prowl in the Mt. Vernon area. 

The caller was able to get a plate number for the car that was seen in the area. It was later found the car had been stolen in Prairie City, and used to commit a string of thefts. 

Multiple vehicles were prowled in the Prairie City, John Day, and Mt. Vernon areas with many firearms and other property stolen. 

The investigation, with the help of residents camera systems, and witness’s, led to the arrest of Karsen Vandetta, 20, of John Day, and a 17 year old male Prairie City Juvenile. 

Vandetta was transported to the Grant County Jail, and the other individual to the Grant County Juvenile Department. 

Deputies were led to a location on County Road 18, where the majority of the stolen goods were stashed. All items have been recovered.
