Utah man in stolen vehicle leads police on pursuit

BAKER COUNTY – (Joint release by the Baker City Police Department and Baker County Sheriff’s Office) On August 1, 2021 at approximately 3:37 p.m., Baker County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a driving complaint. The caller informed dispatchers that a blue Subaru with Baker City Auto Ranch license plates was driving erratically and running stop signs in Baker City.

At approximately 3:39 p.m., deputies and police officers located the vehicle. The vehicle entered I-84 traveling eastbound and reached speeds in excess of 100 mph. In the interest of public safety, the pursuit was terminated at milepost 313. During this time, it was confirmed the vehicle had been stolen from the Baker City Auto Ranch.

Three deputies continued down I-84, exiting the freeway at Huntington to search the area. At approximately 4:18 p.m., the stolen vehicle was seen driving eastbound leaving Huntington.  A deputy encountered the suspect vehicle at a creek crossing. The driver of the stolen vehicle went around the patrol truck, striking the vehicle bumper while fleeing the scene.  As deputies followed the driver, speeds reached approximately 65 mph. While responding to assist, a Sheriff’s Office vehicle crashed, and Sgt. Eric Colton suffered minor injuries.

The suspect continued onto I-84 toward Baker City at a high rate of speed.  Oregon State Police followed the vehicle and Baker City Police Department officers deployed spike strips at exit 304, ultimately disabling the vehicle. The suspect fled into the Super 8 Motel. Baker City Police Department and Oregon State Police set up a perimeter around the motel. As law enforcement personnel cleared the building, the suspect, identified as Garrett Anthonie Kinyon (24 yoa) of Salt Lake City, Utah, was located in a vacant room.  Kinyon was taken into custody without incident.

After contacting Kinyon, it was determined that he was the driver of a vehicle that crashed and caught fire on I-84 on July 31st. After that incident, deputies gave Kinyon a ride to the Super 8 Motel in Baker City.
