WALLA WALLA – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Walla Walla District, will apply herbicide to Lake Wallula this summer to control the invasive aquatic species plant flowering rush.

USACE will perform up to five separate five-acre treatments beginning July 15 through 19. If necessary, treatments may continue through September 1.

There are no fishing and swimming restrictions for the treated areas of water after the herbicide is applied. However, animals should not consume water from the treated water areas for 24 hours after application. Additionally, there is a three-day restriction on using the water from the area of treatment for drinking or to irrigate landscape and a five-day restriction on irrigating food crops.

USACE will post notices on the shorelines of areas where herbicide is being applied 48 hours prior to treatment.

Lake Wallula stretches from McNary Dam upstream to Priest Rapids Dam on the Columbia River and upstream to Ice Harbor Dam on the Snake River.
