WALLA WALLA – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is making firewood available on a first-come, first-served basis at Rooks Park 10 miles east of Walla Walla.
The wood includes both twigs for smoking and logs already cut to fireplace length. Pesticides have not been used on any of the wood. Most of the wood comes from USACE cutting down large trees that pose a potential falling hazard due to age or disease.
Those interested will need a truck or trailer to haul the wood, as well as a chainsaw to cut up longer pieces. Safety equipment must be used when cutting the wood. Also, the wood cannot be sold commercially.
A free permit is required to remove firewood from government land. Call the Mill Creek Office at 509-527-7160 and ask for Ranger Ben Morris to get a permit. Permits are only for those 18 or older.
