UMATILLA – The Umatilla City Council welcomed two new officers to the police department last night. They joined the force on April 1.
“Officers Trenton “TJ” Smith and Anthony Garcilazo embody the core values of the police department with unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community,” a news release from the city stated. “They bring an array of skills and a commitment to serving with compassion and respect.”
Meanwhile, the department is saying goodbye to Officer Steve Vandever who is retiring on April 15 after 18 years of service. He has served as a detective, a firearms instructor, and a field training officer. Prior to joining the police department, he was assistant fire chief with the Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District.
“As Officer Vandever retires from his badge, he will carry with him a legacy of courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication,” Police Chief Ronald Bridge said. “His service echoes in the hearts of those who he has protected and the community he has served.”
