Union County receives over $69,000 dollars in wolf compensation funding

UNION COUNTY – During a regular meeting on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, the Union County Board of Commissioners officially accepted a Wolf Compensation and Financial Assistance Grant from the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) worth $69,176.31. These funds are split between two categories, $15,980 for Category (Death or Injury of livestock or working dogs) and $53,196.31 for Category 3 (Non-lethal prevention).

According to a staff report provided to commissioners, the Category 1 funds will reimburse the losses of local livestock in Union County during the previous grant cycle between 4 different producers, including 17 lambs, 7 ewes, 1 guardian dog, 2 pregnant cows, and 1 steer. The Union County Wolf Advisory Committee will be accepting applications from local producers for THE Category 3 funds to help cover non-lethal deterrent measures.

According to further documentation prepared by the county, of the 14 counties that received compensation funding as part of the 2025 Wolf Grant Program, Union County received the third highest allotment in the state behind Wallowa County ($94,166.31) and Grant County ($74,096.31). The higher allocations for the other two counties were due to them suffering more livestock losses, with Wallowa County receiving $44,970.00 in Category 1 funding and Grant County receiving $20,000.00 in Category 1 funding (along with $900 in Category 4 admin funding).

Union County had also requested $75,214.00 dollars in Category 2 funding, which covers missing livestock, but did not receive any despite the number of applications. According to documentation provided by Union County, no counties received any Category 2 funding from the ODA regardless of the amount requested. In total, $729,318.05 was distributed as part of the 2025 Wolf Grant Program.
