UNION COUNTY – During a meeting on October 2, 2024, the Union County Board of Commissioners officially approved the end of the county’s regulated use Fire Season for 2024. The decision came per a recommendation from La Grande Rural Fire Protection District fire chief Craig Kretchmer and the Union County Fire Defense board. This follows a lifting of the county wide burn ban on September 18.
Keep in mind that the county is still experiencing dry conditions and that Oregon Department of Forestry lands are still under moderate fire danger in Northeast Oregon. Any form of open burning outside of city limits requires a burn permit, which can be acquired by calling the Union County Smoke Management Center at (541) 963-4040.
Burn Barrels and other small-scale burning on ODF lands also require a permit. Properties under ODF jurisdiction are subject to ODF fire restrictions in addition to county regulations. Most individual cities within Union County also maintain their own local burning restrictions and permit requirements. Check local burn restrictions by contacting local fire districts.
