UNION COUNTY – During a regular commission meeting on January 22, 2025, the Union County Board of Commissioners approved a bid from Mike Becker Construction for the construction of two new aviation storage hangars at the Union County Municipal Airport. The total project bid is $1,132,810.00, which includes a base bid for the first hanger (Hanger A) and an additive bid for the second hanger (Hanger B). Mike Becker Construction offered the lowest bid out of five contractors that submitted bids.

According to a notice provided to the Union County Commissioners, Funding for the new construction comes from three different sources, these being a $1,400,000 Connect Oregon Grant (including a match), $710,000.00 in ARPA funding, and the $759,883.25 airport capital budget.

Tentatively, a contract completion date is for September 1, 2025, and will conclude the La Grande/Union County Airport Fuel and Maintenance Facility Improvement Connect Oregon Grant. The hangars themselves are part of a greater airport improvement project that, according to Union County Public Works Director Doug Wright, began around 2019. In June 2023, $938,000 dollars were awarded for the Jet-A Fuel Farm Expansion, which began proper construction in the fall of 2024. When completed, the new hangers will provide additional storage for aircraft and maintenance vehicles, as well as free up space for aircraft maintenance.

Following completion of the hangars, improvements to the airport’s taxi lane and shoulders are planned, though this phase of airport improvements will likely not begin until 2026.
