UNION COUNTY – Construction on the new Union County Fairgrounds wastewater project is picking up. Interior work has begun on the fairground facilities, and heavy equipment will be moving in soon. Before long, the Union County Fairgrounds will have a brand-new plumbing system, including running water and working bathrooms.
According to Union County Commissioner Matt Scarfo, who is also the county liaison to the fair board, volunteers have been working hard on the grounds, with demolition of the non-functional bathroom facilities underway. In addition, heavy machinery will be brought out to the fairgrounds starting Monday, March 9th, for the next phase of construction.
The Union County Fairgrounds itself also announced on Monday that the fairground’s campground will be closed to the public March 9 forward to accommodate the expanded construction.
For those unfamiliar with the project, for years leading up to the 2025 legislative session, Union County had been seeking state support to fund the construction of a new, modern, water and septic system that would connect the fairgrounds to the City of La Grande’s system. During the 2025 legislative session, House Bill 5006 and Senate Bill 5531 provided $2,539,405 in lottery bond funding toward the project, which will be fully allocated in 2027. Ground was officially broken on the project on November 14, 2025, with construction currently underway.
