UMATILLA – The Umatilla City Council approved on Tuesday a resolution that would present to voters a bond measure for a new city police station.
The resolution, which passed unanimously, calls for a May 20 election in which voters would decide to approve a bond levy not to exceed $19,800,000.
The city’s Finance & Administrative Director Melissa Ince gave a presentation at the meeting which outlined how the $19,800,000 figure was decided upon. The construction cost for the project would be $16,000,000, the additional costs come from items that would need to be furnished for the new building including furniture, lockers, training equipment and communication equipment. Ince says that additional costs came from utility relocation for the site, demolition that will need to be performed on the additional property that was purchased, and cultural monitoring that needs to take place during construction. The new facility will also include a dispatch center, and $1,400,000 was needed for the necessary equipment.
Councilwoman Ashley Wheeler mentioned this was a conversation they’d been having for quite a while, and it was great to finally see a presentation.
