PENDLETON – Umatilla National Forest officials have permits available for cutting firewood and for Christmas trees.
Firewood permits: Personal-use firewood cutting on the Umatilla National Forest ends Nov. 30. Firewood permits will not be available again until May 2025. The public is asked to take additional precautions when cutting firewood late in the fall as road and soil conditions are slick, soggy, and saturated. Firewood cutters should be prepared for winter weather conditions.
Christmas tree permits: One-per-family Christmas tree permits are available at all forest offices as well as several local businesses. They can also be purchased online at https://www.recreation.gov. There is a $5 fee for the permit. If purchased online an additional fee of $2.50 is required. The permits purchased online must be printed to be valid and can only be used on Umatilla National Forest lands. They are not valid on private, state or other federally-managed lands.
All fourth grade students are eligible for a free Christmas tree permit from their natural forest. Students can receive a permit through the Every Kid Outdoors website. Permits must be printed. They can be found at https://everykidoutdoors.gov/.
