PENDLETON – The Umatilla National Forest is set to receive an estimated $4.6 million in disaster relief supplemental funding over a three-year period. Public Information Officer Darcy Weseman says the funds will be used to make essential repairs in flood- and fire-damaged areas, starting with Forest Service Road 54, also known as Pearson Creek Road.

“It’s about 10 miles southeast of Pilot Rock,” she said. “It’s a main road that goes into the North Fork John Day Ranger District on the Umatilla National Forest. It’s a key one we get quite a few questions about.”

Weseman said the forest service had to close a 13-mile section of that road due to damage from the flood in May 2020.

“We’ve been able to do some incremental repairs in that area, but having this funding will give us more opportunity to focus on the areas that still need repairs,” she said.
