UMATILLA COUNTY – Umatilla County is known throughout the state as the county that most frequently has the lowest voter turnout of Oregon’s 36 counties. Administrative Services Director Dan Lonai said the county is again mounting its campaign to encourage voters to turn in their ballots for the May 19 primary.
During recent elections, the county has posted signs reminding people to vote. This time around, Lonai said they are trying make it a point of pride for the cities.
“We sent out a letter to all the different city managers and mayors,” he said. “It said that we want to tell you every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday what we are getting back with voters from each of the cities and have a little friendly competition.”
April 28 is the last day to register to vote or change party affiliation. The first day primary ballots will be mailed to voters is April 29. Election day is May 19. Ballots must be postmarked by election day, while ballots deposited in an official drop box must be received by 8 p.m. that day.
Umatilla County drop boxes are outdoors and available around the clock starting 45 days before election day. They are located at Athena City Hall, the Umatilla County Courthouse between Southeast Court and Dorion avenues, Echo City Hall, Hermiston City Hall, Stafford Hansell Government Center in Hermiston, Milton-Freewater City Hall, Nixyaawii Governance Center, Pilot Rock City Hall, Stanfield City Hall, and Umatilla City Hall.
