Umatilla County fire crews join statewide fight against eastern Oregon wildfires

HERMISTON – Local fire agencies are busy in our own backyard, but are also helping statewide as part of Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Conflagration Act.
Umatilla County Fire District No. 1 in partnership with Pendleton Fire and Ambulance, Pilot Rock Fire District, Boardman Fire Rescue District, Irrigon Rural Fire Protection District and the Heppner Fire Department has deployed a regional task force to aid with wildfire suppression and structure protection.
Officials say crews have so far been assigned to the Hagen Fire near Tollgate and the Shingle Fire west of John Day.
Even with the added stress on resources that continue to deal with emergencies at home, these crews are honored to answer the call and assist fellow fire personnel.
“We are grateful for the assistance we have received in the past and are proud to return that support to other Oregon communities when they need it most,” UCFD No. 1 said in a statement. “We know firsthand how valuable those resources are when communities are threatened.”
The agency asks that the public keep these first responders, their families and affected residents in their thoughts as the region moves into the heart of wildfire season.
“We are proud of the professionalism, dedication, and sacrifice demonstrated by our firefighters and our mutual aid partners as they continue to answer the call wherever they are needed,” UCFD No. 1 said.
