UMATILLA COUNTY – The Umatilla County Board of Commissioners will hold a first reading and public hearing on a proposed ordinance that would allow ATVs and UTVs to be driven on certain county roads. The item is on the agenda for the board’s meeting at 9 a.m. tomorrow (Wednesday).

Creating an ordinance that would allow the operation of the vehicles on some county roads has been shepherded by Board of Commissioners Chair Cindy Timmons. She continues to welcome public feedback as the proposed ordinance is being considered.

“The ordinance would allow ATVs on certain county roads and for the area easterly of Highway 11 and 395, and southerly of Highway 74,” the proposed ordinance states.

The ordinance would apply to two-lane gravel county roads as well as paved county roads where the speed limit is 40 miles per hour or less. It would not apply to roads operated by other governments, including the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Other requirements include the possession of a valid driver license.

The Wednesday meeting is in Room 130 of the Umatilla County Courthouse in Pendleton at 9 a.m. To read the full proposed ordinance and get details on how to join the meeting on Google Meets, go to Agendas – Umatilla County and click on the agenda for the Oct. 1 meeting.
