SALEM – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife were alerted to a 425-pound injured calf in a 7,500-acre forested private pasture in the Kamela area of Umatilla County on Thursday. The livestock producer called ODFW after finding the calf.
It was determined that the injuries had occurred two to three weeks before the investigation. There were more than 20 bite scrapes measuring up to three inches long and 3/16 inches wide near an open wound on the hindquarters above the hocks. The area of severe tissue damage was measured at seven inches by seven inches.
The bite scrapes, severity, and location of the wounds are consistent with injuries to live cattle attacked by wolves. The depredation is attributed to the Ukiah Wolf Pack.
This is the second confirmed act of depredation against the pack in less than a month.
