UMATILLA COUNTY – Umatilla County Sheriff Terry Rowan said that most of the problems that surfaced at last week’s county fair in Hermiston were weather related. The extreme heat caused problems ranging from dehydration to heat exhaustion.

“They were emergency medical type calls,” he said. “Otherwise it was relatively mellow. There were a couple of groups we had to remove from the fair for tumultuous activities, but otherwise it went off smooth.”

Rowan said the fair was the warm up for the Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon the second full week of September.

“This was a prelude to Round-Up, of course,” he said. “We’ll start gearing up in that direction, reaching out to community partners and other law enforcement agencies to get boots on the ground. Rowan says the presence of law enforcement tends to put a damper on criminal activity at large events.
