UMATILLA COUNTY – The Umatilla County Public Health Department is alerting residents that there is an ongoing pertussis (whooping cough) outbreak. There have been 21 reported cases (confirmed or suspected) across multiple regions of the county spanning individuals in multiple age groups.

Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory disease that spreads easily through coughing and sneezing. While it can cause severe illnesses, many individuals experience only mild symptoms similar to a common cold. The vulnerable are infants, young children, unvaccinated individuals, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.

Watch for mild cold-like symptoms in the early stages. These can develop into prolonged coughing fits, difficulty breathing, vomiting after coughing, and exhaustion. Vaccination is the most effective way to way to prevent pertussis.

If people or their children develop symptoms, UCo Health advises them to contact a healthcare provider immediately. Those diagnosed may need antibiotics and should stay home to prevent further spread. The health department will continue monitoring the outbreak and providing updates as needed.
