WALLOWA COUNTY – (Press release from the U.S. Forest Service) The Wallowa Mountains Office of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest is planning two shaded fuel break projects along the front range of the Wallowa Mountains to improve wildfire preparedness and reduce risk to nearby communities.
The Upper Wallowa Valley Fuel Breaks project would improve fire management around at-risk homes and property from Lostine east to south Wallowa Lake, as well as the divide between Big and Little Sheep Creeks east of Joseph. The Huckleberry to Minam Fuel Breaks project would improve fire management around at-risk homes and property in and around the community of Wallowa.
A decision on these projects is expected later this summer. The interdisciplinary team is currently evaluating the potential impacts of the proposed activities under Categorical Exclusion.
Shaded fuel breaks project objectives:
Under the proposed action, project activities would include commercial and noncommercial thinning to establish and maintain linear shaded fuel breaks along existing features such as roads, previous fuel breaks, trails, and the Wallowa Lake Tramway corridor on Forest Service land. These strategically placed treatments are designed to reduce fuel loading and support rapid development of fire control lines. Prescribed fire would follow thinning across both project areas.
Fuel break widths vary but would not exceed 1,000 feet. Each project will treat up to 3,000 acres.
The proposed fuel breaks on the Eagle Cap and Wallowa Valley Ranger Districts support natural and prescribed fire management near the Eagle Cap Wilderness, adjacent communities, private lands, and essential infrastructure. Dense forest stands seen along the front range are more susceptible to high-severity wildfire. The treatments proposed in these two projects will supplement the treatment completed by local fire protection associations and individuals on private property, providing strategically located features that improve suppression effectiveness, reduce the likelihood of uncharacteristically large and severe wildfires, and help protect at-risk homes and property.
Fuel breaks are not intended to stop wildfire on their own. Instead, they provide fire managers with feasible, preidentified options for establishing fire control lines more safely and efficiently during wildfire response.
