Two separate fires kept La Grande EMS busy on Monday afternoon

LA GRANDE – Local police and fire agencies had a busy day on Monday, as EMS responded to two separate fires in the La Grande area, according to information posted by the La Grande Rural Fire Protection District (LGRFD). The first fire was reported at around 2:30 p.m. along I-84 westbound near milepost 252 at the OR-244 Ukiah exit. According to an EMG staff member that drove through the area, the vehicle was a local septic truck. 

LGRFD Noted that the driver of the truck was able to pull the vehicle off the highway and escape in time, with Oregon State Police (OSP), Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) and Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) assisting with scene management. LGRFD Largely cleared the scene by around 3:10 p.m. 

Later that afternoon, LGRFD and the City of La Grande Fire Department were dispatched to a piece of farm equipment that had caught fire in a field between Mulholland Drive and Buchanan Lane, near the Stonewood Mobile Home Park. The fire then spread into the vegetation and began moving toward residences off 26th street. According to some residents who reached out to Elkhorn Media Group (EMG) during and after the response, the fire allegedly came within 10-feet of some homes, though no residential damage was reported. LGRFD informed EMG that the fire was under control at around 4:30 p.m., with mop-op continuing into the early evening. As recently written by the LGRFD in a post on Monday evening:

“Thankfully, a quick attack in combination with residents wetting down their homes with garden hoses stopped the fire before reaching any structures. LGRFD was also assisted by Oregon Department of Forestry – Northeast Oregon District, La Grande Police Department, Oregon State Police and Imbler Rural Fire Department. We’re proud of our volunteers who really put some work in today!”
