LA GRANDE – (Information provided by EOU Athletics) The Cascade Collegiate Conference has announced its WVT Laboratory Players of the Week and Eastern Oregon University had a pair of student-athletes make the list after helping guide their respective teams to wins this past weekend.
Earning the weekly honor was Cooper Lumsden and Jay Smith. Lumsden was tabbed the Men’s CCC Basketball Player of the Week, while Smith was named the CCC Men’s Wrestler of the Week. It is the first weekly honor for both athletes in their young EOU careers.
Lumsden was superb on the hardwood for the Mountaineers as they competed with just seven active players. The true freshman started his first career game for EOU and shined, scoring a career-high 32 points. He shot 7-16 from the floor and was 6-13 from deep to finish over 40% in both categories. Lumsden also did not miss a single free throw going 12-12 and he dished out a game best nine assists to go along with five rebounds. The Boise, Idaho native played all 40 minutes in the Mountaineers 102-93 home win over Multnomah.
Smith continues to be a force at 197 pounds for the Mountaineers this season as he went 2-0 in dual action. His two wins last weekend improved his dual record to 6-3 and he now owns an overall record of 17-8 on the year. His 17 wins so far are most on the team. Smith’s two wins were both hard fought decisions. His first win of the weekend was a close 3-1 decision over Va Ili of Arizona Christian, which sealed the team win for EOU. His second win was an 8-4 decision over Michael Densmore of No.18 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.).
