Two Canyon City students receive trade school scholarships

CANYON CITY – OTEC will be helping two local high schoolers attend trade school. The cooperative’s Communications Director Joe Hathaway was on KJDY’s Coffee Time and congratulated Preston Boethin and Sage Browning for their awards:
“..we also have two other local kids who have received trade school scholarships. That’s Preston Boethin from Canyon City and Sage Browning from Canyon City. They both received $2,500 scholarships to attend trade school.”

Six local students whose families are member-owners of Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative (OTEC) have earned scholarships to power their futures through the OTEC Member Foundation.
Preston Boethin of Canyon City, Sage Browning of Canyon City and Campbell Vanderwiele of Baker City have each been awarded $2,500 scholarships to attend trade school.
Ethan Bauer of Burns, Johnathan McKelvey of Burns and David Shaw of Baker City have been awarded $5,000 scholarships to pursue careers as linemen.
“OTEC and the OTEC Member Foundation are proud and committed to supporting the educational goals of our local students and giving back to the communities we serve.” said Charlene Chase, President of the OTEC Member Foundation Board. “These scholarship opportunities to support our local students’ career pathways in the invaluable trades and utility industries, and the others OTEC provides, are another way we can add to that effort.”
Scholarship recipients are selected from a pool of candidates from OTEC’s service territory in Baker, Grant, Harney, and Union Counties. Scholarship funds come from unclaimed capital credits.
Applications for both trade and lineman school scholarships are open year-round. You can apply at www.otec.coop/scholarships. The OTEC Member Foundation plans to award more trade and lineman school scholarships later this year. The Foundation will announce its Academic Scholarship recipients at OTEC’s Annual Meeting on May 6.
