MISSION – Umatilla Tribal Police got more than they bargained for when trying to initiate a traffic stop on Mission Road near Parr Lane on the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Police report that they wanted to stop the 2001 Honda Civic when it drove across the center line of the roadway.
“When the officer activated the emergency lighting to signal the driver of the vehicle to stop, the driver of the vehicle fled from police at a high rate of speed,” a written report states.
The Civic traveled west on Mission Road into the city of Pendleton at a high speed, driving recklessly. That prompted the officer to utilize the pursuit intervention technique, referred to as a PIT maneuver, to bring the car to a stop. The chase ended near Southwest Court Avenue and Southwest 20th Street in Pendleton.
Chelsey Arriola-Morris, 26, of Walla Walla, was arrested on a Washington parole violation warrant and is also charged with attempting to elude and reckless driving. Passenger Timothy Golden McMurphy, 35, of Pendleton was also taken into custody on an outstanding Oregon parole warrant. Umatilla Tribal Police were assisted by the Pendleton Police Department during the pursuit and arrests.
