HERMISTON – A registered sex offender from Pendleton is scheduled to have his trial date set Wednesday. Mathew Daniel Rhorer, 35, faces multiple serious charges including first-degree kidnapping, attempted murder, and aggravated assault when he allegedly attacked a 16-year-old girl near the Umatilla River on May 29.
“This is a significant case with an individual that unfortunately we’re familiar with,” Umatilla County District Attorney Dan Primus said.
Rhorer’s pretrial hearing was in Courtroom 1 in Pendleton, but Primus said that due to COVID-19 restrictions, it is being moved to the Stafford Hansell Justice Center in Hermiston.
“Courtroom 5 is being utilized as a trial courtroom,” Primus said. “They have moved all other matters to Courtroom 1 and Courtroom 3 in Pendleton.”
Judge Dan Hill will handle all the trials. Primus said the change was made to allow social distancing measures for jury trials.
