LA GRANDE – (Release from Union County Search & Rescue) Did you know that over 99% of people needing rescue by SAR in the state of Oregon live outside the county where they are rescued. This substantially underscores the need to be properly prepared and equipped, and to do your due diligence and preparation before exploring new areas. While SAR missions are down 22% in Oregon this year from last, there have already been 596 missions in the state this year. Injuries requiring SAR response have increased substantially, and over the past decade alpine rescues in Oregon have more than doubled, increasing 19% in just the past year and leading to increased (41%) and more extreme lifesaving helicopter missions.
Union County has seen these same trends as technology has reduced instances of people becoming lost, but this decline has been balanced by a long-term increase in injuries and emergent rescues. One trend we have been very happy to see is an increase in the use of satellite navigation and communication devices, which greatly aid us in reaching and communicating with individuals when they do need help. Please always prepare, have a plan, and communicate that plan with others before you enjoy our outdoors. It’s important to know your limits and plan for activities that won’t exceed your experience or equipment to avoid becoming a search and rescue statistic.
