LA GRANDE – The La Grande High football team will have a new general on the sidelines this fall.
Longtime assistant coach Dalton Sheets has been tapped as the Tigers new head coach, replacing Rich Mcllmoil, who stepped down after five seasons.
Sheets has served as an assistant coach for the football team for the past ten years. He’s also currently coach of the high school’s JV baseball team, coach of the middle school wrestling team and is a fifth-grade teacher at Island City Elementary.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to step up and grow as a leader,” said Sheets. “We have a good group of kids who have started putting work in already this summer. We have a lot of spots to compete for and we’re excited to see how it shakes out.”
The Tigers football team finished 9-3 last season, making it to the 4A semifinals before losing to Tillamook. The Tigers last won a state championship in 2019.
Sheets was also recently honored by the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association as the middle school coach of the year for his work with the wrestling team.
