UMATILLA COUNTY – Umatilla County Commissioner Cindy Timmons is watching for progress with House Bill 2615 in the Oregon legislature. That measure would allow veterans to benefit from the Oregon Promise program for higher education if they enroll within a year after discharge.

“Our veterans – they serve, they deserve,” she said. “I believe that, and I think that’s a great bill. We need to keep an eye on that and make sure it gets some traction.”

The bill was heard before the Committee on Emergency Management, General Government, and Veterans earlier. That panel sent it to the Joint Ways and Means Committee, recommending that it be passed.

Meanwhile, Timmons says Umatilla County is now offering veterans’ services in the northern part of the county to help vets navigate the Veterans Administration system. The help is available at the county building, 418 N. Main St., Milton-Freewater every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
