MISSION – Umatilla County Commissioner Cindy Timmons recently toured the Blue Mountain Mill on the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Construction is expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year, but she said it’s already paying off for wheat growers in the area.
“They have contracted 50,000 acres of wheat here in the local area and they’re going to go ahead and grind it there,” she said. “They use huge stones that come out of Egypt to grind it.”
Timmons said that once the mill is operational, people can order wheat from the Blue Mountain Mill either online or on site.
The mill will be operated by Cairnspring Mills of Burlington Washington. The facility will create more than 20 jobs. It will also support Tribal economic development and food sovereignty goals. The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation entered into a 50-year land lease agreement and made an equity investment in the operation.
Cairnspring Mills is hiring for the mill now. Go to Jobs – Cairnspring Mills for the link to send resumes.
