LA GRANDE– The first Tiger Homes project through La Grande High School is nearly complete and an open house will take place this Friday, February 28 for those who are interested in taking a tour.
According to Scott Carpenter, Assistant Superintendent with the La Grande School District, there will be a brief program at the onset of the event, that will include the reading of a letter from Governor Kotek. Additionally, other people involved will speak as well.
For those unfamiliar, the Tiger Townhomes project is a program developed in partnership between the La Grande School District and various local private and government groups to construct a pair of townhomes in La Grande. As part of the project, La Grande High School Students enrolled in the district’s CTE and construction classes assist with the building of the homes and receive hands-on vocational training and experience throughout the process. As reflected by La Grande Superintendent George Mendoza: “It’s been a great project, offering very relevant and applied learning. It’s been strong for our construction program to start that project, and kids are getting skills to become painters, contractors, plumbers, or to learn carpentry.”
The open house will be held from 12pm until 2pm on February 28, 2025, on the corner of 3rd and I in La Grande.
This location is also the site of Tiger House 2, where construction is already underway. Tiger House 1 is being sold to Grande Ronde Hospital for use as long-term temporary staff housing.
