BAKER COUNTY โ€“ Vehicle vs animal strikes are a common occurrence. Three vehicles hitting the exact same animal during one crash is less common, but still unfortunate for all involved. On the evening of Saturday, February 8, 2025, the Oregon State Police responded to a reported vehicle vs elk crash along I-84 Eastbound in Baker County. The crash occurred near milepost 341 at roughly 6:38 in the evening. A total of three vehicles were involved, all of which hit the same elk. As described by the Oregon State Police in a recent press log:

โ€œOn the above mentioned date and time, a Trooper responded to a vehicle versus elk injury crash near MP 341 on 1-84 EB. Once on scene, it was determined that an EB Prius struck an elk standing in the roadway causing reportable damage and injuring the driver.

An EB Chevy sedan struck the injured elk causing reportable damage. An EB semi-truck also struck the injured elk, causing no reportable damage. The driver of the Prius was transported by ambulance to the hospital with minor injuries. All other parties involved declined medical attention. Both drivers arranged for their own tows and no citations were issued. โ€œ

Thankfully, only minor injuries were reported. Drivers are reminded to be extra mindful of wildlife in the roadway during this time. Temperatures are expected to be well below freezing for the next several days, increasing the possibility of ice buildup and subsequently the required stopping distance for vehicles. Always slow down to match conditions and increase following distance between vehicles.
