The Steens Mountain Loop road is open…mostly

HARNEY COUNTY-The Steens Mountain Loop Road is open! Mostly… A one-mile section near Big Indian Gorge Overlook remains closed due to a 2023 rockfall and instability above the roadway. The area is waiting for geo-engineered stabilization, which will happen as soon as possible this summer. With this closure, there is no continuous travel around the entire Steens loop – only ‘out and back’ adventures for now.

There are no turnarounds for large or towing vehicles, campers, or recreational vehicles near the closed section. Plan accordingly.

Not to worry – you can still access all your favorite places on Steens Mountain. Four developed campgrounds, five overlooks, many hiking trails and Riddle Brothers Ranch are ready for your visit!
