TOUCHET – The Walla Walla County Rural Library District celebrated the grand opening of a new library building in Touchet yesterday. The new building is named the Jean Marie Sansom Memorial Library. Sansom was a Touchet resident who worked for the library district for over 20 years, she passed away in 2020.
Students, parents and community members came to the grand opening where they could see the new facilities and hear several speakers, including Executive Director Ana Romero who said she hopes to see the enthusiasm she saw at the event continue for years to come.
Walla Walla County Commissioner Gunner Fulmer was also in attendance, and mentioned how important facilities like this are to rural communities.
“You have these smaller communities that really rely on these things that are really the bread and butter of their community,” said Fulmer.
The library also includes a community multipurpose room, that Romero says Touchet residents identified as a priority for the new facility at public hearings early on in the planning and design process. This gives the community a public meeting space that is available after hours.
The library is located at 82 Champion St., adjacent to the Touchet School District building. It’s open Tuesday through Thursday 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is closed Sunday and Monday.
