JOHN DAY – Grant County Emergency Management Coordinator Eric Bush was on Coffee Time Tuesday to discuss the potential tornado event that occurred near John Day on Sunday, November 5th. Our newsroom has since reached out to the National Weather Service, and they are still making the determination on if it was, in fact, a tornado, and its Enhanced Fujita (EF) rating of 0 through 5.
Bush said that if the agency does make that positive determination, it would be the first one officially recorded in Grant County since 1890:
“A lot of unique things happened out of this event. A lot of lessons learned. The first thing is, it’s notable from an historical standpoint. Our last documented tornado, as some people know, was in 1890 up in Long Creek. So, this would be the first one documented in 133 years. It doesn’t mean we haven’t had others, that just nobody saw or paid attention to out in the woods somewhere.”
