PENDLETON – The National Weather Service in Pendleton has issued an extreme heat warning for a wide area including the lower Columbia Basin in Oregon and Washington, the foothills of the Blue Mountains, and the eastern Columbia River Gorge. The warning goes into effect at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) and lasts until at least 8 p.m. Friday.
Cities in the warning area include Pendleton, Hermiston, Walla Walla, Boardman, Waitsburg, Athena, Condon, Arlington, Heppner, Wallowa, John Day, and the Tri-Cities.
“Extreme heat will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses for much of the population, especially those who are heat sensitive and those without effective cooling or adequate hydration,” the warning states.
Daytime high temperatures are expected to range between 102 and 108 degrees throughout central, north central and northeast Oregon and central, south central and southeast Washington state.
People are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room if possible, stay out of the sun, and check on relatives, friends and neighbors. Naturally, young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
Those who work outside are advised to schedule any strenuous activities in the early morning or evening hours. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
The city of Walla Walla is taking the heat wave seriously. On Wednesday afternoon officials announced that between today and Aug. 1, city construction projects will begin at 6 a.m. with heavy demolition occurring after 7 a.m. For sheltering information dial 211 during business hours or visit 222info.org for information in Oregon and wa211.org for Washington state.
