Swat Team activated in effort to locate burglary suspect

On September 30, 2021 at approximately 4:11 p.m., Baker County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a call involving a burglary in progress. The homeowner, Jim Rex, arrived at 42140 Atwood Road and encountered a male with a rifle leaving his property. It was believed that the suspect took various items, including a firearm.

Oregon State Police, Baker City Police Department, U.S. Forest Service and Baker County Sheriff’s Office law enforcement personnel responded to the area. Law enforcement searched the property and made contact with vehicles traveling through the area. At approximately 4:30 p.m., the Northeast Oregon Regional SWAT Team, which is comprised of members from La Grande Police Department, Union County Sheriff’s Office, Baker City Police Department and Baker County Sheriff’s Office, was activated.

A command post was established, and members of the SWAT team combed the area from Atwood Road to Interstate 84 until approximately 7:54 p.m. A specialized tracking K-9 was deployed and followed the scent trail to I-84. Law enforcement personnel are continuing to collect evidence.

The Baker County Sheriff’s Office also received assistance from the Baker County Road Department and Baker Aircraft.
