WALLULA – SkyNRG announced Thursday a key milestone for Project Wigeon, a planned sustainable aviation fuel facility in Wallula, after securing environmental approvals from the Washington State Department of Ecology and Walla Walla County.

The company said these approvals confirm that the project meets state and local environmental standards, including requirements related to land use, water protection, and fuel transportation.

Project Wigeon, which will be built in the Port of Walla Walla’s Wallula Gap Industrial Business Park, will be among North America’s first commercial-scale sustainable aviation fuel projects producing jet fuel from renewable natural gas (RNG).

Fuel produced at the Wallula site will use RNG feedstocks, otherwise known as biogenic methane. RNG is collected from domestic landfills, wastewater treatment facilities, and manure from animal farms, and can be delivered to Project Wigeon through existing infrastructure.

Last year, the Washington State Department of Commerce awarded a $1.5 million grant to the port to support SkyNRG’s construction of the facility. The project now moves into the engineering phase and is on track for operations to start in 2030. Up to 600 jobs will be created during construction and up to 100 jobs once production begins.
