Firefighters killed and injured in shooting near Coeur d’Alene have been identified

UPDATE: As of 4:40 P.M., June 30: Coeur d’Alene officials have identified the firefighters killed in the line of Duty as Battalion Chief John Morrison of the Coeur d’Alene Fire department, and Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Chief Frank Harwood.

Officials have also identified the firefighter injured in the attack as Engineer Dave Tysdal of the Coeur d’Alene Fire department, who is currently in critical condition at Kootenai Health. As written by Dave’s wife, (and read by officials):

“We thank everyone for their love and support. Dave is surrounded by his family and is able to open his eyes, and the two surgeries have gone well.”

Update as of 10:25am, June 30, 2025: The suspected sniper, who killed two Idaho firefighters last night and injured a third has been identified at 20-year-old Wess Roley.

As of 7:45pm: The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office reports that “members of the SWAT team located a deceased male on Canfield Mountain. A firearm was found nearby.”

Additionally it was reported that the “Shelter in Place is being lifted however there is still an active wildfire on Canfield Mountain Residents in the area are advised to be prepared and ready should further action need to be taken.”

Kootenai County Emergency Management reminds citizens that “There is still an active wildfire on Canfield Mountain. Local residents should be prepared and ready in the event that the situation escalates.”

The public is asked to stay away from the Canfield Mountain area near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho due to an active sniper and wildfire situation.  A sniper opened fire on emergency responders early today, who were responding to the scene of an active wildfire in the area.

According to the Kootenai County Emergency Management,law enforcement and emergency crews are on scene.

The Kootenai County Sheriffโ€™s Office reports that two people, believed to be firefighters, have been killed and at this time there is an unknown number of casualties.  During a press conference, the sheriff noted that he encourages authorities to take out the active Idaho shooter if they have a “clear shot.”
