YAKIMA – The man suspected in Tuesday morning’s convenience store shooting that took the lives of three people is dead, according to Yakima Police Chief Matt Murray. Jarid Haddock, 21, a resident of Yakima County, is believed to have taken his own life.
“It appears to be a random situation,” Murray said. “There’s no apparent conflict between the parties and the male just walked in and started shooting.”
The suspect fled Circle K, located at Nob Hill Boulevard and 18th Street, in his own vehicle. That vehicle was located hours later with no one inside outside of a residence in Terrace Heights.
The search for Haddock continued. Murray said that around 2:15 p.m., the department received a 911 call that the suspect was in the area of the Target store on North Fair Avenue and had borrowed a woman’s cell phone.
“He then called his mother and he made several incriminating statements including I killed those people,” Murray said.
The suspect had also said he was going to then kill himself. The woman was able to get her cell phone back and get away from Haddock.
Police received details of the suspect’s whereabouts and immediately responded to the area. Officers found the suspect around North 11th Street and Staff Sergeant Pendleton Way, behind the Target store, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Murray said medical attention was provided at the scene, but that the suspect was later pronounced dead.
