EASTERN OREGON – Multiple baseball and softball teams from across the region are one step closer to a state title.
Wednesday, May 22 saw the second round of 3A & 2A/1A playoffs and while some teams survived and advanced to the next round, other teams’ season came to a close.
In 3A baseball, Joseph/Enterprise/Wallowa’s season ended with a 16-8 loss to Brookings-Harbor.
A brutal night for local teams in 2A/1A baseball, with Heppner/Ione falling to Clatskanie, Union/Cove losing to St. Paul over in the Willamette Valley, Irrigon losing to Umpqua Valley Christian and Grant Union/Prairie City being eliminated by defending state champs Kennedy.
Looking ahead, Pendleton/Nixyaawii baseball will face Marist Catholic in the 4A quarterfinals in Eugene on Friday, May 24 at 5:30pm.
A brighter picture for local teams in softball, with defending 2A/1A champs Grant Union/Prairie City cruising past Myrtle Point 16-4 in round two. The Prospectors will face the winner of Lowell or Santiam in the quarterfinals at home on Friday, time TBD.
The 2A/1A quarterfinals also gives fans a local matchup, with league rivals Heppner/Ione/Condon squaring off against Weston-McEwen/Griswold on Friday at 4:30pm. Both teams won their second round games on Wednesday. Winner of this advances to the semifinals.
Two local teams are also alive in the 3A tournament. Defending champs Burns/Crane blew past Creswell 9-0 on Wednesday. The Hilanders will take on Santiam Christian at home on Friday for a shot at another appearance in the semifinals.
Enterprise/Joseph/Wallowa also advanced with a 9-3 victory over Pleasant Hill. They now head to southern Oregon to take on South Umpqua on Friday in the quarterfinals.
Friday also sees a 4A quarterfinal showdown between league rivals La Grande and Pendleton for a shot at the semifinals. First pitch is 4:30pm at Sunridge Middle School in Pendleton.
