CLARKSTON – Several Walla Walla Community College staff, former students, and community members spoke Wednesday at a board of trustees meeting in support of the college’s Clarkston campus, which faces potential closure due to a looming budget crisis.

Over the last month, the board has discussed a projected $4.3 million budget shortfall. Officials attribute the deficit to rising costs, changes in the state’s allocation model, and a reduction in overall funding.

The board is considering three proposals to address the shortfall, all regarding the Clarkston campus:

  • No changes for that campus, with an approximate net cost increase of $23,500
  • Closing all programming on the campus except nursing and Allied Health, with an approximate net cost savings of $1.3 million.
  • Full closure of the Clarkston campus, with an approximate net cost savings of $3.2 million

During the public comment period, speakers echoed concerns that were previously raised during special meetings held earlier this month. Many focused on the potential impact a closure would have on the Clarkston community, specifically regarding the nursing program’s role in the local healthcare system.

“Our community faces significant challenges and access to affordable education through the campus is one of the few pathways that many of our residents have to improving their lives,” said Clarkston City Councilmember Robin Albers

Albers argued that cost reductions should be equitable across the entire WWCC system, noting that closing the Clarkston campus would be disproportionately harmful to rural students.

Near the conclusion of the meeting, WWCC President Chad Hickox addressed rumors of alternative solutions, including potential collaborations with community partners to support the nursing program.
