HERMISTON – Students entering first through fifth grades in the Hermiston School District begin their summer program tomorrow (Thursday). Superintendent Tricia Mooney said it became apparent that parents needed summer support because of the work they do.
“We live in an agricultural area, and we have a lot of families where the adults put in really long hours in the summer,” she said.
Students taking part in the summer program are fed breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They begin their days at the elementary schools they attend and then, at midday, the program transitions into after-school care with Champions. The school portion of the program transitions into full-day childcare by Champions from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in early August. Transportation is provided.
“We’re really looking at meeting the needs of our community,” Mooney said.
The district will also offer a three-week kindergarten camp for those beginning school. Details on that will be announced at a later date.
