UNION COUNTY – Union County Search and Rescue recently responded to a pair of stranded snow bikers in the Wolf Creek Reservoir area of Union County. Thanks to a quick response by SAR members and proper preparedness by the snow bikers, the pair were easily located and given a ride out of the wilderness. Union County Search and Rescue posted the following release explaining the full operation:
From Union County Search and Rescue
“Monday evening, February 10th, Union County SAR received a report of two snow bike operators who had gotten stuck and were unable to recover their bikes in deep snow on a steep timbered slope west of Wolf Creek Reservoir in Union County. The stuck individuals fortunately had both phone service and a GPS phone app and so were able to communicate their precise location and situation with SAR. Due to the steep terrain, deep snow, darkness, and uncertainty on mechanized access, SAR responded with two snowmobile teams, a tracked UTV, and a snowshoe team. Tracked UTV mobility was very limited due to the deep snow, but snowmobiles were fortunately able to reach the individuals and bring them down a drainage to the UTV, which then transported them back to a plowed road.
We are grateful that the stranded party had and knew how to use the mapping app on their phones, had a satellite communicator as a backup, practiced good battery conservation, and did not wait to call until the situation had become more critical due to the cold temperatures. Preparedness is key to survival, and sometimes even a short outing can turn into an extended event.
As always, a huge thank you to our amazing volunteers who eagerly responded to this call.”
