WALLA WALLA – Crews working to renovate Heritage Square Park in downtown Walla Walla recently made an unexpected find – a 10,000-gallon storage tank.
Walla Walla Parks and Recreation Director Andy Coleman said the tank contained about 5,000 gallons of an oily substance, thought to be heating oil which likely fueled a building that once occupied the site.
The cost of removing the tank and disposing of its contents will add $130,000 to the $2.6 million renovation project to turn the park into a new place for public events and performances.
Coleman said no contaminants were found in the ground and the park is scheduled to open in May.
