STANFORD, California – Every year, Stanford University’s Rural Engagement Network holds a panel discussion on a topic of interest to rural communities. This year, there will be a familiar face on the panel of four. Morrow County cattle rancher Jim Doherty has been selected to discuss “Re-energize Rural: Big Data, Growing Grids, & the New Tech Challenges Facing Rural America.”

Doherty is joined on the dais by Matt Dunne, the founder and chief executive officer of the Center on Rural Innovation from Vermont; Erik Hatlestad, a rural energy cooperatives expert from Minnesota; and Rep. Jade Sooktis of Montana who is also a member of the American Indian Caucus.

The discussion will center on how emerging technologies – from data centers and artificial intelligence to energy infrastructure and broadband – are reshaping rural America.

“The conversation will explore both the opportunities these industries bring and the challenges they pose for rural communities, focusing on how local leaders, policymakers, and innovators can work together to ensure that technological growth supports sustainable rural economies and community well-being,” the organization states.

The event is organized by the Stanford Rural Engagement Network with support from the Bill Lane Center for the American West, the Haas Center for Public Service, Energy Club, ePluribus, and Explore Energy House.
