KENNEWICK – Kennewick officers responded to Ranch and Home on North Columbia Boulevard a little before 8 a.m. Wednesday, and ended up in a standoff with Kerry Brooks, 28, who was armed with a knife.
Employees reported that Brooks had followed employees inside while the store was closed and made mention of a firearm before he was escorted outside. When officers arrived, they attempted to contact Brooks who pulled a large survival-style knife out of his waistband and made threatening gestures, according to a news release form the Kennewick Police Department.
Brooks refused to follow commands, so police called in addition resources. K9 officers from KPD and the Benton County Sheriff’s Office and on-duty SWAT officers responded. Kennewick’s mental health professional and a SWAT negotiator tried to de-escalate the situation and have Brooks put down the knife. Those negotiations failed.
Brooks came towards officers with the knife in hand. KPD said they used less lethal devices and the K9 to subdue the man and take him into custody. Brooks was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries before he was jailed.
