SR-125/Plaza Way roundabout work begins Tuesday
WALLA WALLA – Work on the State Route 125/Plaza Way is scheduled to begin Tuesday, July 6, according to Walla Walla Public Works.
Consistent with feedback received during a recent public survey, the intersection will be closed to through traffic in all directions for approximately seven weeks.
The contractor, Nelson Construction, anticipates running three shifts to complete the work before the Walla Walla Fair and Frontiers Days begins Sept. 1.
The detour route during this stage of work will be Myra Road and Poplar Street.
Businesses will remain open throughout the duration of the project.
The Washington State Department of Transportation project consists of two stages. The first stage is to construct a roundabout at State Route 125 (Ninth Avenue)/Plaza Way/The Dalles Military Road intersection to improve traffic flow and reduce the risk of collisions. The first stage also includes improving Plaza Way south to Village Way and replacing the traffic signal at Plaza Way and Tietan Street. The second stage includes an upgrade to the railroad crossing State Route 125 (Ninth Avenue) and extend the sidewalk on both sides at State Route 125 (Ninth Avenue) to the north.
The first stage is anticipated to be complete in October 2021. Stage two is currently planned for construction in 2022. The project is predominately funded by $3.9 million in state funds and $3.2 million in federal funds.
