BAKER COUNTY — People across Baker County are spreading the love to help local students in need.
The Baker County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) announced in April the start of a peanut butter drive to donate to the Baker City Backpack Program, which helps feed needy students in the community. The agency is accepting 16 ounce jars of peanut butter.
According to the BCSO, the reaction and outpouring of support has far exceeded what organizers expected.
The BCSO says in one week, it has received more than 230 jars of peanut butter and hundreds of dollars in donations.
One $500 donation, along with 40 jars of peanut butter, was contributed by C-Squared Custom Builders, Inc., based in Baker City.
“I plan on being part of this community forever and appreciate all the help I’ve received over the years. Giving back is the least I can do,” said Mason Cline, owner of C-Squared Custom Builders, Inc. “These donations are made possible by the hard work and dedication of my employees and the wonderful customers we love working with.”
The BCSO says another $150 donation came from the Baker City Lions Club
The Sheriff’s Office also says that Buzz Harper, Chief of Keating Rural Fire Protection District, was the first to show up with cases of peanut butter, (Photo above is Chief Harper with his donation). Sheriff’s Office deputies and staff immediately jumped in and ordered numerous cases and donated funds to support the cause.
In a Facebook post, the BCSO says, “Our hearts are incredibly full, and we can’t thank you enough! We are so grateful to serve the public in this wonderful community. We will continue taking peanut butter donations through May 15th.”
