Harney County(Released by the BLM)- Kiger Gorge on Steens Mountain is deep in frost. Visitors have reported 3 inches of snow at Fish Lake and twenty-inch drifts into Kiger Gorge Overlook.
The BLM would like to remind you if you plan to visit public lands, know before you go. Weather can change in an instant, especially with moisture or in higher elevations. On Steens Mountain, blustery, 100-degree days are common, and snow can fall year-round. Be prepared for sudden lightning storms, snow, rain and high winds. Many public land roads are rough and primitive. High clearance of 4×4 vehicles with high quality tires are recommended. There are often long distances between services and amenities, such as fuel, drinking water, restrooms and cell phone reception. Lastly, vast and remote landscapes may leave even the most experienced traveler confused or lost. Make sure you are traveling with a current map of the area.
