SNAP mandatory interviews return June 1

SALEM – The interviews required for applying for or renewing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits that were placed on hold during the pandemic, become mandatory on June 1. The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) says this returns SNAP to standard federal standards.

The interviews are mandatory before benefits can be approved. The interview rule will also go in effect for households that previously did not need an interview. For example. ODHS says the requirement is for all adults 60 or older or meet the SNAP definition of disability, and those where no one in the household has income from work.

The interviews help confirm information, prevent errors, make sure people are receiving the correct benefit amount, and connect people to the full benefits for which they may qualify.

To prepare for the change, SNAP beneficiaries should make sure ODHS has current contact information, watch for mail, email, text messages or phone calls from ODHS about the interviews, and respond to messages from ODHS to avoid delays.

Recipients may respond to ODHS in the way that works best for them – either online through a ONE Online account; by phone at 800-699-9075 or 711 (TTY); in person at a local office (find one online); or by mail at ONE Customer Service Center, P.O. Box 14015, Salem, OR 97309.
